Acute rehabilitation is an inpatient setting for patients who require intensive, multidisciplinary interventions to address impairments arising from debilitation or acute illness or injury. The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation unit (PM&R) is most appropriate for patients with complex rehabilitation needs and who require close medical supervision to maximize their recovery. On PM&R, patient care is overseen by a physiatrist who coordinates medical care (including, as necessary, consultations with neurologists, cardiologists, and other specialists), nursing, rehabilitation services, and social work, with the goal of maximizing a patient’s return to independent living.
To achieve that goal, patients receive three hours of therapy per day, five days per week, split as needed between physical, occupational, and (if necessary) speech therapy. Patients work with physical therapists to develop strength, endurance, and balance in order to progress functional mobility such as transfers and walking; occupational therapists help patients develop self-care skills such as dressing, bathing, and home management; speech therapists work with patients to address speech difficulties, swallowing impairments, and cognitive or behavioral issues.
Working with experienced and skilled therapists, patients begin the process of recovery from a broad array of conditions, including but not limited to:
- Stroke
- Head injury
- Spinal cord injury
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Other neurological conditions
- Fracture management & joint replacement
- Amputation
- Other orthopaedic conditions
- Cardiopulmonary conditions
