— HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus in Kingston has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's highest stroke-care award.
The Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award "recognizes the hospital's commitment to and success in ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence," the association said in a statement.
"Gold Plus" is the highest level of recognition possible and signifies consistent adherence to recognized quality measures for at least 24 consecutive months.
"We in the HealthAlliance Stroke Center focus on providing the absolute best care to patients," said registered nurse Donna Dahl, the hospital's stroke and chronic heart failure coordinator. "This prestigious recognition validates our commitment to delivering the most advanced stroke treatments to patients quickly and safely."
To receive the award, HealthAlliance had to achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With the Guidelines-Stroke Quality Achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With the Guidelines Quality-Stroke Quality Measures, designed to improve the quality of patient care and outcomes.
"With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and this award demonstrates our consistent commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the best, most timely care based on nationally respected clinical guidelines and quality measures," said HealthAlliance Chief Medical Officer Dr. Paul Llobet.
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain bursts or is blocked by a clot. When either happens, part of the brain starts to die.
"It takes the daily consistent, judicious, vigilant and collaborative effort of every member of the HealthAlliance Stroke Center to achieve the most optimal outcomes for patients with stroke," Llobet said. "I am very proud of our multidisciplinary team for its commitment to implementing the highest standards of care and protocols for treating stroke patients."
Get With the Guidelines national steering committee Chairman Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt said the association was "pleased to recognize HealthAlliance and its staff for their commitment and dedication to stroke care."
"Studies have shown that hospitals that consistently follow Get With the Guidelines quality-improvement measures can reduce patients' lengths of stay and 30-day readmission rates and reduce disparity gaps in care," said Bhatt, executive director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States, the heart and stroke association says. On average, someone in the United States suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
