KINGSTON — HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley added eight new vital signs monitors, at a cost of more than $23,000, to its Kingston clinical operations.
Six of the advanced touchscreen monitors have been added to the three medical-surgical floors of HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus, the seventh to the campus's inpatient dialysis unit and the eighth to the outpatient HealthAlliance Dialysis Center on Albany Avenue.
The monitors, paid for by the Kingston Auxiliary of HealthAlliance Hospital, augment 29 vital signs monitors already in use on the medical-surgical floors and eight in HealthAlliance's dialysis programs.
HealthAlliance Hospital now has 65 vital signs monitors at its Broadway and Mary's Avenue campuses and Dialysis Center.
The new monitors, made by Philips Healthcare, measure a patient's heart rate, breathing rate, body temperature and blood pressure — the four primary vital signs healthcare providers routinely record — as well as the amount of oxygen in a patient's blood.
Nursing staff members typically wheel the monitors into a patient's room to take the patient's vital signs. The measurements help clinicians assess a person's general physical health. They also give clues to possible diseases and show progress toward recovery.
"The new monitors help us deliver excellent patient care with ease and enhance clinical decision-making," said medical-surgical unit Director Carol Schrowang, a registered nurse. "The devices give nursing staff members the flexibility to monitor a wide range of patients concurrently and with advanced clinical measurement technologies that provide consistently accurate and reliable readings, even in challenging conditions."
"We are very grateful to the Kingston Auxiliary for raising and donating the money to buy these state-of-the-art vital signs monitors," said Steffen T. Kraehmer, executive director of the HealthAlliance Foundation. The foundation administered the auxiliary's gift.
"The auxiliary is a backbone philanthropic and humanitarian supporter of HealthAlliance," Kraehmer said. "Its many members, who assist in the gift shop and organize fundraisers, are tireless workers in our behalf. We greatly appreciate their dedication to supporting excellent and compassionate care at HealthAlliance and offering direct enhancements to our patients' well-being."
