KINGSTON, N.Y. (June 27, 2016) — The Michael B. Finnegan Golf Classic at Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston raised $85,000 to support cancer services and staff training at HealthAlliance Hospital.
More than 150 golfers, volunteers and supporters gathered for the 35th annual event June 10. Twenty-eight teams competed in a four-person scramble. The Covington team of Bill Collins, Jake Hommel, Bryan Smith and Mike Stock took home the coveted Finnegan Cup.
Since 2014, proceeds from the amateur golf classic have been dedicated by the HealthAlliance Foundation to enhancements for the new cancer unit and infusion center planned for the future single HealthAlliance Hospital. With foundation support, HealthAlliance will work with the local arts community to incorporate color, images, sound and water to create a healing environment for cancer patients and families.
This year, the golf classic also raised nearly $13,000 to establish the Ann Horowitz Memorial Scholarship, a monetary award to assist with continuing education for oncology staff.
Horowitz was a cancer patient at HealthAlliance Hospital and her family was grateful for the exceptional care she received.
"Ann was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and respected member of our community who passed away in June 2015," said Horowitz daughter and committee member Ellen Peruso.
"This scholarship is established in her memory to help cancer unit staff receive the specialized training, education and certifications they require to continue providing quality, compassionate care to patients like Ann."
Foundation Executive Director Steffen Kraehmer added, "We are pleased to offer educational opportunities to HealthAlliance staff through the Ann Horowitz Memorial Scholarship, and we thank the golf classic participants and committee for their support." The scholarship will become part of the foundation's Scholarships, Training, Awards and Recertification, or STAR, program, which provides professional development to clinical and nonclinical staff members.
Tournament sponsors included ePlus Technology Inc./ Dell; Rondout Savings Bank; Ulster Savings Bank; Ashley Mechanical Inc.; HealthAlliance, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network; J&A Roofing; J&J Sass Electric; and the Stote Family.
About The Michael B. Finnegan Golf Classic
The Michael B. Finnegan Golf Classic (MBFGC) was named in 2001 for Michael Bradley Finnegan, a wonderful husband, father, son, brother and friend who was tragically lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Finnegan was an avid golfer, having won the Ulster County Men's Championship in high school, and the first chairman of the golf tournament that later bore his name. The MBFGC committee is proud to support cancer services with the tournament's proceeds.
