The Emergency Department at HealthAlliance Hospital offers complex, multidisciplinary emergency care 24 hours a day to adult and pediatric patients, including walk-ins and those brought in by EMS, serving all levels of emergency needs. We see patients with chest pain, difficulty breathing and severe infection, plus bumps, bruises, and broken bones. Our team of highly skilled physicians, board certified in Emergency Medicine, our trained emergency care nurses, and other emergency health care professionals are supported by real time imaging and diagnostic technology. HealthAlliance is a state-designated Primary Stroke Center. This means the program complies with the state’s high standards for providing advanced stroke care. It also means the center’s highly trained staff consistently meets or exceeds the most up-to-date clinical practice guidelines, performance measurements and continuous improvement programs for stroke patient care.

HealthAlliance also continually earns the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and the association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite recognition. The Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award recognizes HealthAlliance for its commitment to, and success in, ensuring stroke patients receive excellent care based on the latest evidence-based scientific guidelines. To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite recognition, HealthAlliance met the association’s quality measures developed to reduce the time between a stroke patient’s hospital arrival and treatment with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator, or r-tPA, which the association considers “the gold standard” for treating ischemic strokes, caused by blood clots.

In addition, HealthAlliance is a sister hospital of Westchester Medical Center, the only state-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in the Hudson Valley. HealthAlliance stroke patients can be easily transported to the medical center if they need the highest level of care.

Telestroke

The TeleStroke Program at HealthAlliance Hospital and Margaretville Hospital connects patients at these facilities with stroke specialists at Westchester Medical Center. WMCHealth’s secure, high-definition eHealth Program offers patients personalized care from advanced WMCHealth specialists without having to travel to visit them. A pediatric emergency room and inpatient care services are now open at MidHudson Regional Hospital, in association with Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, the Hudson Valley’s only acute care children’s hospital. Both organizations are members of WMCHealth.

Behavioral Health Emergency Services

 

Behavioral Health Emergency Services are provided at the HealthAlliance Hospital Emergency Department seven days a week, 24 hours a day. After patients are screened for medical complications, they receive a behavioral health evaluation. For those in need of continuing care, we offer in-network inpatient admissions along with referrals to outpatient clinics and programs, including day treatment and partial hospitalization programs. We focus on your safety and comfort, as well as the safety of others during mental health assessments.

Autism-Friendly Program

2014-spring-10

Patients with autism react and communicate differently, requiring a special approach to creating a safe and supportive environment – especially in emergency situations. Recognizing the opportunity to develop a comprehensive approach for this need, HealthAlliance Emergency Department leadership initiated a special training program for medical providers, nursing staff and key hospital personnel, such as security.

Besides training, the program incorporates sensory boxes which allow an patient with Autism Spectrum Disorder to select an object, such as a squeeze ball or pinwheel, to aid in relaxation and in dealing with stress. The Emergency Department also acquired two iPads that feature autism-specific apps that help staff communicate with patients with autism and verbally impaired patients. The devices help medical providers learn the reason why the patient has arrived for care; the patient’s pain and discomfort level; and his or her communication preferences.


Fast Track

Patients can also come to the Emergency Room for illnesses and injuries that are not critical in nature.

Many ailments and minor injuries can be diagnosed and treated through our Fast Track program including:

  • Minor orthopaedic injuries
  • Minor allergic reactions
  • Wound infections
  • Eye infections and injuries
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Simple lacerations
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Viral syndromes
  • Wound checks

Fast Track is available 7 days a week, 10 a.m. - 11 p.m.


Imaging and Diagnostics in Emergency Medicine

Imaging at our Emergency Department includes wide array of advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies. The Emergency Department at HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus features CT technology and real-time digital radiography enabling physicians to quickly view and interpret CT scans, MRI results, sonograms and reports. We also utilize a digital documentation system that tracks physician documentation and interfaces with other hospital departments, allowing for quick retrieval of up-to-date records and treatment history – a critical need when time is of the essence.
