Cardiac Distress

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you are experiencing cardiac distress with any of the following symptoms of a heart attack, which include, but are not limited to, the following (source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention):

  • Chest pain or discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center or left side of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or that goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.
  • Feeling weak, light-headed, or faint. You may also break out into a cold sweat.
  • Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck or back.
  • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms or shoulders.
  • Shortness of breath. This often comes along with chest discomfort, but shortness of breath also can happen before chest discomfort.

Other symptoms of a heart attack may include unusual or unexplained tiredness and nausea or vomiting. Women are more likely to have these other symptoms. Learn more about women and heart disease.

Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Cardiology Program

Our physicians at WMCHealth Heart and Vascular Institute are experienced with cardiac catheterization and coronary angiography.

Angioplasty and Stent Placement

An individual presenting with chest pain, shortness of breath or other cardiovascular symptoms may suffer from coronary artery disease or blockages of the major arteries that supply blood to the heart. Angioplasty and stenting involves opening up these blockages to improve quality of life and blood flow to the heart. This therapy is the primary treatment for patients experiencing a heart attack.

Our physicians at WMCHealth Heart and Vascular Institute are experienced with all aspects of modern-day angioplasty and stenting.

Peripheral Vascular Intervention

Similar to procedures on the heart, peripheral interventions involve angioplasty, stent placement and other procedures to the remaining arteries throughout the body. These include procedures for the kidneys, legs, arms and other major vessels as clinically indicated, with the goal of reducing leg pain, chest pain and arm pain, as well as improving poorly controlled hypertension and kidney dysfunction.

The Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP) Program, which provides care in a rapidly growing subspecialty of cardiology, is now offered in Ulster County.

Heart Arrhythmia Treatment Technology

The Electrophysiology Program uses the latest technology to diagnose and treat heart arrhythmias, irregular rhythms caused by abnormalities in the heart’s electrical system. Symptoms of an arrhythmia vary but can include palpitations, shortness of breath, fainting – and in extreme cases, a loss of heart function (cardiac arrest).

WMCHealth’s specialized Electrophysiology services in Kingston include:

  • Pacemaker implantation
  •  Diagnosis and evaluation of heart arrhythmias
  • Implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) implantation
  • Catheter ablation of cardiac arrhythmias

While many patients treated at HealthAlliance Hospital will be able to stay within their community for cardiac care, those in need of more complex interventions will be transferred to other WMCHealth cardiac centers, including Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern and Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. Transfers are seamless with physicians collaborating on patient care across the region for the WMCHealth Heart and Vascular Institute.
