When it's time to come to the hospital

mom and baby What to pack – Since trying to pack your suitcase between labor contractions can be difficult, we advise you to pack a suitcase one to two weeks before your baby is due. Pack one suitcase with things you will need during your hospital stay. Also pack a small bag with anything you may need while you are in labor.

Here are some suggestions for labor:

  • Relaxing music
  • Massage lotion, body mist, linen spray(if you are interested in aroma therapy, good scents for labor are geranium, rosemary, lavender, and chamomile)
  • Focal point(something that you can focus on to help you through contractions, such as a favorite photo or comforting object from home)
  • Lollipops or hard candies
  • Lip Balm
  • Headband, hair ties or barrettes

Here are some suggestions for postpartum:

  • Robe and slippers
  • Bras or nursing bras
  • Toiletries (favorite soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste)
  • Hairbrush (we supply blow dryers)
  • Comfortable clothes for going home

For the baby:

  • Comfortable clothes to wear home (weather appropriate)
  • Receiving blanket (weather appropriate)
  • Infant car seat (this is required by New York State law)

When to come to the hospital:

It is always best to ask your doctor about their recommendations for when you should go to the hospital, but the following is a generally accepted guideline:

  • If you have been contracting every five minutes for an hour, OR…
  • If your contractions are at least every ten minutes, growing more intense, lasting longer and coming closer together.
  • If you think your membranes may have ruptured.
  • Whenever you sense that something “isn’t right.” Listen to your body. It’s always best to call your doctor and  have it checked out.
