Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

therapist and patientAcute rehabilitation is an inpatient setting for patients who require intensive, multidisciplinary interventions to address impairments arising from debilitation or acute illness or injury. The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation unit (PM&R) is most appropriate for patients with complex rehabilitation needs and who require close medical supervision to maximize their recovery. On PM&R, patient care is overseen by a physiatrist who coordinates medical care (including, as necessary, consultations with neurologists, cardiologists, and other specialists), nursing, rehabilitation services, and social work, with the goal of maximizing a patient’s return to independent living.

To achieve that goal, patients receive three hours of therapy per day, five days per week, split as needed between physical, occupational, and (if necessary) speech therapy. Patients work with physical therapists to develop strength, endurance, and balance in order to progress functional mobility such as transfers and walking; occupational therapists help patients develop self-care skills such as dressing, bathing, and home management; speech therapists work with patients to address speech difficulties, swallowing impairments, and cognitive or behavioral issues.

Working with experienced and skilled therapists, patients begin the process of recovery from a broad array of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Stroke
  • Head injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Other neurological conditions
  • Fracture management & joint replacement
  • Amputation
  • Other orthopaedic conditions
  • Cardiopulmonary conditions

How does one get admitted to the Rehabilitation Center at HealthAlliance Hospital?
Most patients are admitted after an acute care hospitalization. A referral is generated by a physician. Patients, who meet certain criteria can also be admitted from home with a referral and a physician’s prescription. Medicare requires patients to meet certain criteria based upon medical and functional conditions. Prior approval is often needed for most major insurances. All admissions must be reviewed by the Rehabilitation Center’s Medical Director prior to being accepted.

How much therapy should a person expect to do in a day?
Patients are expected to do three hours a day of Occupational, Physical and if appropriate Speech Therapy. This is spread out over the course of the day with the amount of each therapy tailored to the individual’s needs.

What activities should I expect to do in therapy?
The goal of acute rehabilitation is to restore functional mobility such as walking, dressing, eating, speaking, and home management, in order to maximize independent living. All activities are designed to support that goal. Some patients may need to build up more fundamental capabilities such as strength, balance, fine motor control, or language skills; our therapists design each patient’s plan of care based on their specific needs and can include everything from arts and crafts to resistance training to singing.
